Photos and Promotional Materials

The Center's general stills collection includes photographs (positive and negative), posters, pressbooks, playbills, clippings, scrapbooks, graphics and ephemera totaling several million items. These materials have been gathered from all of our collections, and provide pictorial documentation of motion pictures, television, and theatrical productions.
The Film Title File contains scene stills and promotional graphics from over 40,000 domestic and foreign motion picture titles from the 1890s to the present. All major U.S. studios are represented, with particularly comprehensive coverage of publicity for the films released by United Artists, MGM, Warner Brothers, Universal and Republic studios from the 1920s to the 1950s. Television programs and series, especially from the 1950s and 1960s, are also represented.
The Theater File, organized by play title, contains a wealth of pictorial documentation on the American theater from the 1860s to the present, from Broadway productions to regional and local repertory.
The Name File is made up of publicity and personal photographs, clipping files and personal ephemera on more than 14,000 individual motion picture, television, and theater performers, as well as a limited number of photos of producers, directors, writers, and studio executives.
These files can only be consulted in the Archives Research Room.
